Es una iniciativa global que busca promover el uso de medios de transporte más sostenibles y amigables con el medio ambiente, como la bicicleta, el transporte público o caminar. Esta fecha se celebra cada 22 de septiembre y tiene como objetivo principal concientizar sobre los efectos negativos del uso excesivo del automóvil en las ciudades, como la contaminación del aire, el ruido y la congestión vehicular. Sin embargo, esta fecha en Chile corresponde a una iniciativa ciudadana impulsada por organizaciones sociales y el Ministerio de Transportes; y que desde el 2018 busca darle un respiro a las ciudades, fomentando el uso de otros modos de transporte.
Esta iniciativa es de mucha importancia, tanto como para el medio ambiente, como para nuestra propia salud, ya que, al reducir el uso del automóvil, se disminuye la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero y otros contaminantes que contribuyen al cambio climático, por otra parte fomenta la actividad física y mejora la calidad del aire, lo que beneficia la salud de las personas, por otra parte también reduce la congestión vehicular, mejora la movilidad urbana y crea espacios más agradables para vivir.
